TVA to host symposium on fly ash research
January 21st, 2010 by Jennifer Walker-Journey
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is hosting a symposium March 11-12 on fly ash research as part of its response to last year’s catastrophic spill at its Kingston Fossil Plant. The event will be coordinated by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) and held at Roane State Community College in Harriman. Registration is $50.
The goal of the two-day event is to identify areas of collaboration among those conducting coal combustion product research; to call attention to gaps in current research and technologies; and to inform the public of current and future research initiatives, according to ORAU, a university consortium that partners with national laboratories to enhance scientific research and education enterprise.
Topics include site characterization; geochemistry; exotoxicology; cleanup, remediation and recovery; ecological studies; and environmental risk management. The symposium is geared toward researchers.
The symposium will include a general session and four concurrent breakouts sessions. A poster exhibit focusing on research pertaining to the six major content areas will be on display for both symposium participants and the general public. Free viewing sessions are from 4-7 p.m. on March 11 in the student lounge of the Dunbar Building.
Anyone can submit a poster abstract for consideration. Those who submit abstracts that are chosen to be on display as part of the symposium’s poster session will be exempt from paying the $50 registration fee. For more information, contact Steve Roberts at (865) 241-0831, or e-mail steve.roberts@orise.orau.gov. For guidelines on submitting a poster abstract, visit www.orau.org/flyashsymposium/posters.htm.
